Tattooed Mama - Kirstie from Gap Year Mummy

Welcome to another Tattooed Mama and Papa interview! lets meet this weeks Tattooed Mama.........................

Tell us about yourself

I’m Kirstie, I’m 23 and from (not so) sunny Morecambe. I’m the proud mum of two amazing little boys; Oliver (4) and George (4 months). I’m pretty new to the whole Insta-mum thing and I started up just before Christmas as @gapyearmummy . I’m yet to dare to venture into blogging. I’m a soon to be university student and I’m taking yet another gap year to spend some time with my little ones.

How many tattoos do you have?

I have 3 tattoos, all fairly small in size. They are placed on the arch of my foot, my hip bone and my ankle.

What was the first tattoo you got and why did you have it done ?

I had my first tattoo when I was 16 (naughty). The tattoo is a Latin phrase on the inside arch of my foot and it reads ‘Semper Tripudio’. It means ‘always dancing’. When I was 16 I was so passionate about dancing, I trained every night of the week and had my heart set on making a career from it. I still love the tattoo now even though I don’t dance anymore.

If you’ve got more than one tattoo which is your favourite and why?

My favourite tattoo is the one on my hip. It is a realistic portrait of an owl. I mean the poor thing is about out of shape after being stretched twice but I just adore owls, and it’s such a lovely tattoo. Also because I don’t see this tattoo as often as the others, when I do look at it, I appreciate it more

How do others react to your tattoos?

All of my tattoos are in places that can’t be seen unless I want them to be. I think tattoos are pretty common place now, so I’ve never had any negative comments. I always get questioned about the meaning of my Latin phrase and what language it is, which I like because you can’t just look at it and go ‘Oh yeah, it’s a dolphin’ etc. It makes people think.

Do you regret any of your tattoos and if so why?

I’m not one for regret really. I still love all my tattoos.

Are you planning on getting anymore tattoos, if yes what are you planning and why?

I think I will probably have one more tattoo, quiet a big one in homage of my boys. Again I don’t want something straight forward like their names and dates of birth. I’m still throwing some ideas around but I’m thinking something floral like their birth month flowers.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about your tattoos?

My third tattoo is the one that means the most to me and has the most meaning. This tattoo is a breast cancer awareness ribbon, with two feathers, in a traditional style. For the past 5 years breast cancer has been a huge part of mine and my families lives. 5 years ago my mum was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, she had to have aggressive treatment and it had to be done quickly as it was so close to spreading further and becoming terminal. Around a year after this my auntie finds a lump and is in the very early stages of breast cancer and a year after that the same with my nan. After further investigation it was found that this type of cancer is genetic and another of my aunties had the gene. Both my mum and two aunties have since had a double mastectomy and had their ovaries removed, two through treatment and one for preventative purposes. These four women are so incredibly brave and such a huge inspiration to me, we have always been very close and they have taught me so much. They are the reason I am the mum I am. 5 years down the line they are all still cancer free, but the breast cancer journey will continue to be a massive part of our lives for a long time to come, all three sisters all have children who could also potentially carry the gene, me being the next eldest and the next to be tested. Now we are aware and prepared whatever the outcome. My tattoo is in homage to the most amazing women in my life and their individual journeys.

Thank you to Kirstie for sharing her tattoos with us, I love the breast cancer awareness tattoo, and its meaning to Kirstie and her family.  You can follow Kirstie over on Instagram.
