Tattooed Mama - Sara from The Fish Finger Mum

Welcome to another Tattooed Mama and Papa interview! lets meet this weeks Tattooed Mama.........................

Tell us about yourself

I’m Sara, I’m 35, a secondary school teacher of Computing (and part of school leadership team!). I’ve got a 15 month old baby girl born 4/10/16 and write a parenting blog The Fish Finger Mum.

How many tattoos do you have?

I have 7 tattoos now but technically it’s 9 as 3 are joined together in my back piece

What was the first tattoo you got and why did you have it done ?

My first tattoo was at 18 when I left home to go to uni. It’s a purple & green Celtic cross at the base of my spine which is now suspended by a chain from some scary dragon hands! I had it done because I’d always said I wanted tattoos and my mum made it clear I couldn’t have any done until I’d left Home... so when I left home, it was the first thing I did!

If you’ve got more than one tattoo which is your favourite and why?

My “favourite” tattoo changes regularly but I think it has to be my pocket watch symbolising the birth of my daughter

How do others react to your tattoos?

I find people have a marmite reaction to my tattoos! Many people ask “what are you going to do when you’re 60?!” - to which I reply - “probably retire from teaching and get more tattoos!”

Do you regret any of your tattoos and if so why?

I don’t “regret” any of them no, I want to get more added to my backpiece as I feel it needs “finishing”. My backpiece has been the only real controversial one - especially at other people’s weddings!

Are you planning on getting anymore tattoos, if yes what are you planning and why?

I am planning on adding a swallow carrying a geranium lead to my anchor & rose tattoo in memory of my grandmother who passed away.

I regularly plan more... it’s just a case of finding somewhere to fit them that a) won’t interfere with an existing tattoo and b) can be easily covered!

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about your tattoos?

Each of my tattoos has its own story behind it and I never get “flash” work done from a book - they are all personally designed for me. The last few have been designed by the same artist and I am planning on going back to him for more later in the year.

The longest of stories...

Celtic cross at the bottom I had done when I left home at 18

The tribal helix between my shoulders was for my 21st birthday.

The dragon represents a big “change” in my life where I left an abusive ex - the less said on that the better really but it took 9 hours to complete! The dragons eye colour was chosen by my friends daughter who was 5 at the time!

Pocket watch set to the time daughter was born, 2 full roses in bloom (white for me, black for my husband) and a rose bud for baby. Her name and date of birth in Roman numerals

Butterfly with peonies: done in memory of my godfather passing away in 2008 - he died unexpectedly in September of that year and unusually for the season we saw many butterflies around and so, as they signify rebirth in many cultures, I had a butterfly done. It faded terribly so I had it redone in March 2016. Found out the next day I was expecting!

My uncle was sadly killed on the M6 in May last year when a lorry knocked him off his Harley Davidson... rose as it’s a family tradition, piston to represent his motorcycle club, Harley Davidson wing and his “badge” from the club

Simply: an artistic interpretation of my wedding bouquet

Another memorial tattoo: I lost both maternal grandparents within 6 months of each other in 2014. My grandad was in the navy and my grandmother planted rose bushes for each of her grandchildren. Their ashes are buried under these rose bushes

This one was to mark my 30th birthday

Thank you to Sara for sharing her tattoos with us, I love the tattoo on her foot (I'm debating whether to get my next one done on my foot).  Sara blogs over on The Fish Finger Mum and you can follow her on Instagram.

Are you a Mama or a Papa with tattoos?! Want to take part in my interview series?!  Then I'd love to hear from you!!
